Career Salary: Chris Pronger
Chris Pronger was one of the best defenseman in the NHL for a long stretch, then he didn't play toward the end of his final contract. In the end, how much did he make during his career?
For most of his career, Chris Pronger was one of the top defenseman in the NHL. His zenith came in 1990-200 with the St. Louis Blues, when he won the Hart and Norris Trophies and became the first defenseman since Bobby Orr in 1971-72 to win the Hart (league MVP).
Pronger’s last played a game in 2011-12 with the Philadelphia Flyers, when he played a total of 13 games. Post-concussion syndrome kept him off the ice, then the Flyers traded his rights to the Arizona Coyotes in 2015 in a salary cap maneuver. He never put on a Coyotes’ sweater, but he also wasn’t off their payroll until his contract expired following the 2016-17 season.
So Pronger clearly got some “money for nothing” at the end of his career (cue Dire Straits). But exactly how much did he make?
With those five seasons of no games played at the end accounted for by Spotrac, Pronger wound up collecting $113.95 million over 23 seasons of cashing NHL checks.
