Jaguars are shining example of winning offseason not translating to winning games
The Jacksonville Jaguars have money to spend this offseason, but maybe the Urban Meyer era will bring different results
The first wave of NFL free agency has seen the New England Patriots go against their grain in terms of spending. The Jacksonville Jaguars had the most cap space in the league, and they’ve spent some too as they accelerate a rebuild under new head coach Urban Meyer. Winning the offseason rarely translates to winning games, and the Jaguars stand as the shining example over the last decade.
Indeed, the Jaguars are 44-116 over the last 10 seasons (.275 winning percentage). Meyer is their fifth full-time head coach since 2011, and the sixth head coach overall counting Mel Tucker’s interim stint at the end of that first season.
In a broad sense, the Jaguars haven’t spent that recklessly this offseason. Their decision to franchise tag left tackle Cam Robinson was odd, but that’s about it. The roster needed better depth, and that’s how they’ve approached things. Time will tell if they’ve landed the right players.
