JT Daniels is drawing very early, but worthy, Heisman hype
With a strong finish last year and an excellent performance in the spring game, Georgia quarterback JT Daniels is drawing some early Heisman hype
Georgia’s spring game went about as well as could have been hoped on Saturday. Despite being without some of his top wide receivers, most notably George Pickens, who suffered a torn ACL in March, quarterback JT Daniels looked great in new coordinator Todd Monken’s offense (28-for-41 for 324 yards and three touchdowns). Freshman wide receiver Adonai Mitchell had seven catches for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Upon taking over as the Bulldogs’ quarterback over the final four games last season, Daniels finished strong (1,231 yards, 10 touchdowns, two interceptions; 67.2 percent completion rate).
SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum appeared on WJOX Monday morning, and pumped up the Heisman Trophy hype around Daniels.
They are legitimate,” Finebaum said of Georgia. “And I think when the talking heads start chattering as soon as I go off the air here, we’re going to hear the JT Daniels for Heisman type of train. And it’s legitimate. He is everything we thought he was going to be. When we finally saw him, we knew. It’s always the same issues for Georgia, though. They deal with the toughest opening game in the country (against) Clemson … and then the vagaries of the SEC. I think they are way ahead of Florida right now. But they still have to go to Auburn. We don’t know about that, do we? And the SEC Championship Game, likely against Alabama.
Purely due to the gauntlet of games Georgia will have to navigate, as they always do, if Daniels plays well he will be a top Heisman candidate. April is early to have that kind of conversation in earnest, but Daniels is a sneaky name to stash away for future reference.
