Former Gopher Marcus Carr tabbed top available remaining college basketball transfer
Marcus Carr was a notable exit with the Golden Gophers coaching change and the new freedom to transfer, and CBS Sports thinks highly of him among those who are still available
If ability to transfer freely without having to sit out a year due to the pandemic wasn’t enough, coaching changes further bolster what amounts to free agency in college sports. The Minnesota Golden Gophers’ men’s basketball program, with the switch from Richard Pitino to Ben Johnson as head coach, have been hit by a player exodus.
On his fresh list of uncommitted college basketball transfers, David Cobb of CBS Sports put former Gophers’ guard Marcus Carr at No. 1.
After four years in college, it wouldn't be shocking to see Carr wind up keeping his name in the NBA Draft conversation, because he's certainly good enough to make money playing basketball somewhere, even if he's not selected. The 6-foot-2 guard was asked to shoulder a huge scoring load for Minnesota as a redshirt junior this past season, but he's also a solid distributor.
Carr (19.4 points per game) was the Gophers’ leading scorer last season, while also averaging a clear team-high 4.9 assists per game. He also chipped in 4.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. He shot less than 39 percent from the floor and less than 32 percent from 3-point range, but before a fairly cold final four games those rates were 40.6 percent and 33.5 percent respectively.
Kentucky has been reported as a school with interest in adding Carr as a transfer if he doesn’t go pro. As he gets feedback on his NBA draft stock, he is sure to find he’s not highly regarded. ESPN has him at No. 93 in their ranking of the top-100 2021 draft prospects right now. Europe could be an option to go pro. But playing what amounts to a free year of college ball is the easy choice for Carr, be it at Kentucky or wherever he might land.
