Trevor Lawrence won't get left shoulder checked out in Indianapolis
Presumptive No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence won't be going to Indianapolis this weekend for a medical evaluation, but he's got a pretty good reason.
Knowing he needed surgery on this non-throwing shoulder, presumptive 2021 No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence had his Pro Day early. He had said surgery on Feb. 16, with a clear eye on being ready for his first NFL training camp.
In a typical year with an NFL Combine, draft prospects go back to Indianapolis for follow-up medical evaluations. Nearly 150 players are doing that part of the process right now, but Lawrence isn’t among them.
Lawrence is getting married this weekend, so he’s got a good reason to skip the medical evaluations. The indication his rehab is going well is expected.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are locked in to taking Lawrence first overall later this month, with no indications otherwise and head coach Urban Meyer acknowledging it without saying it word-for-word.
So a medical exam in Indianapolis is of no benefit to Lawrence. There’s no improving his draft stock, and other teams don’t need clarity on his shoulder since they won’t have a chance to take him. The Jaguars will draft him, and their medical staff will have some input in monitoring the rest of his rehab. And his wedding date was presumably set months ago, before the follow-up medical evaluations in Indianapolis were formally scheduled.
Any story of the medical exams right now is only a story if someone notable skips them, or another issue causes them to be missed (see Notre Dame players and a COVID-19 issue). For Lawrence, he’s got a bigger priority and the trip to Indianapolis wouldn’t do anything for him anyway.
