Minnesota Wild name Jared Spurgeon team captain
The Minnesota Wild have made defenseman Jared Spurgeon the second full-time team captain in franchise history.
Mikko Koivu was named the Minnesota Wild’s first full-time captain for the 2008-09 season, and he remained in that role until his departure to the Columbus Blue Jackets in free agency this offseason. On Sunday, the team announced defenseman Jared Spurgeon has been named the second full-time captain in franchise history.
The 31-year old Spurgeon has spent his entire career with the Wild, now entering his 11th season. He posted 32 points (12 goals, 20 assists) in 62 games last season, with three power play goals and 13 power play points. For his career, he has 82 goals and 198 assists with a +50 plus/minus.
The Wild showed their commitment to Spurgeon last fall, signing him to a seven-year. $53.025 million contract extension through the 2026-27 season. As Dane Mizutani of the St. Paul Pioneer Press noted, that $7.575 million average annual value is the highest in Wild franchise history. As the deal gets set to start, Spurgeon now has the “C” on his jersey to further mark his importance to the Wild.
